Kitchens
Each kitchen is a little different with some groups cooking and eating a meal together, some groups cooking lots of food to take home to eat later and some groups having a special focus on a certain type of food such as vegetarian. It is up to individual community kitchens to decide how their kitchen will be run.
Here’s a current list of the region’s active Community Kitchens. If there’s a new one we don’t have listed yet, please let us know by emailing info@communitykitchensnw.org.

North Seattle Community Kitchens
Queen Anne Community Center Lifelong Recreation Community Kitchen
Our program is directed toward seniors who live in one or two person households. We aim to use lean protein sources, whole grains and minimal
saturated fat and salt. Each session has four main dishes– poultry, beef, pork or fish and vegetarian— plus two side dishes— usually whole grain or a vegetable. We like to introduce folks to more unusual grains so we have used quinoa, bulgur and wild rice in addition to the more common brown rice.
Each participant takes home 12 individual servings ready for the freezer–two of each recipe plus a recipe folder. The kitchen meets on the third Tuesday of the month from 1:30 to 4 pm. Cost is $25 per session. Limit 6 participants, prior registration required. To register call 206-684-4240. Located at QA Community Center, 1901 1st Ave W.

Rainier Family Kitchen
Food is the one common thread that weaves through all our lives. Eating is a basic need we all face and throughout history has shaped the cultures of people around the world. Looking at the food culture in America which is reflected in our obesity epidemic and crumbling health care system, it is clear that we must reshape our food habits. This is why the Community Kitchen Project is increasingly important. These gatherings offer community members a supportive environment to come together by pooling resources and preparing large quantities of food to share, all while learning new cooking skills, meal planning techniques, and enjoying the company of their fellow neighbors. Community Kitchens offer the potential through long term establishment to address the issues of food security and diet related chronic disease prevention through lifestyle habits around food.
The Rainier Community Kitchen Project intends to increase accessibility to quality foods for low income families with few resources and support systems. The approach is to enhance self sufficiency by participants acquiring basic culinary skills and meal planning to enhance their home cooking based on the knowledge and resources obtained through the community kitchens. These events will also provide social opportunities for those who are isolated or lacking family support.
This pilot program will bring community kitchens to low income residents in the Rainier Valley of South Seattle. Beginning in October 2009 through June 2010, monthly kitchen events will be offered at both the Rainier Community Center. Through their involvement in community kitchens, participants will increase access to healthy foods by cooking and taking home prepared meals. They will enrich their cooking and meal planning capacity by having guided cooking stations following healthy recipes with input from both a nutritionist and experienced cook. Lastly, they will foster social networks for their well being by interacting and connecting with their fellow neighbors. Recognizing the diversity found in South Seattle, the sharing of food cultures through community kitchens also offers a unique way to bring people of different backgrounds together in a nurturing environment through an angle of empowerment to share food ways with others.
Rainier Community Kitchen
Kitchens are held on the second Thursday of the month from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm and cost is 25 dollars per kitchen. We usually make a fresh salad, a casserole to freeze, a soup and a baked item like cookies. When possible we try to use fresh, organic produce and while we do use meat the main focus is on vegetarian options.
The Rainier Community Center kitchen is located at 4600 38th Ave. S. The phone number is 206-386-1919.
To register please go to the SPARC web page and register on-line. You can also register in person but need to do so at least by the day before as we need to know how much food to buy.

Pike Market Senior Center Kitchen
Even though Ryan graduated from the California Culinary Academy in 2004
with training in classic French cuisine, he doesn’t cook quite that way anymore. Through stints cooking in restaurants and cafes, selling single-origin olive oil, pouring wine, and making micro-roasted coffee (he’s currently a barista), he found the way he really likes to cook.
Kitchen meets the second Thursday of the month and cooks with produce from the market. For more information contact Ryan at: jjeatsndrinks@gmail.com
