iPhone App to Help Choose Healthier Foods

March 16th, 2010 by Diana

From “Healthy and Green Living” comes an article on using your phone to make better food choices.

There are more than 1,500 food additives and ingredients listed in the Don’t Eat That iPhone app ($1.99). This is a handy app to have with you at the grocery store. Ingredients that are listed in red are ones that you might have a concern with. Those listed in black are generally considered natural and safe.

I downloaded the app and pulled out a couple of foods from my cabinet. The package of crackers that I pulled out has a few ingredients that are questionable. Take the soy lecithin in the crackers for example. It is listed in red. According to the app it’s an emulsifier that blends two or more liquids that normally would not mix. It’s chemically derived from soybeans using hexane.  More

    Hi Diana,

Nicely written report. Have you checked out the FoodEssentials Scanner? It’s the premier app for finding Healthier Foods – so I thought it relevant to post about it here.

Basically, you can use it to scan food products (bar-codes) and then learn about the allergen, additive, ingredient and nutrient properties – indicated by a traffic light system too.

You can also scroll through similar products and highlight the ones that best suit your needs. There’s a simple list feature to help save the research you’ve done.

We’re very proud of it. And would love to hear what you thought of it.
